MUSIC AND GENIUS COLLIDE
OPENS AT ENSEMBLE THEATRE COMPANY OCTOBER 11
September 16, 2014 – Santa Barbara, CA — Ensemble Theatre Company opens its 36th Season with the Tony Award and Oscar-winning masterpiece Amadeus by Peter Shaffer. Called “triumphant” and “thrilling” by The New York Times, and brimming with gorgeous music and language, Amadeus follows the meeting of – and inevitable rivalry between – Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, two of the most gifted composers of the Eighteenth Century. Distressed that Mozart is exceptionally talented but unrefined in his manner, Salieri makes it his mission to undermine and destroy his remarkable adversary. Friendships are forged, bonds are broken, and eternal fame is the sole prize in the competition between two brilliant but tragically flawed men.
Amadeus runs at the New Vic Theater from October 9 - October 26 and opens Saturday, October 11. The production is sponsored by Léni Fé Bland and Sara Miller McCune, with additional support provided by Joan and Geoffrey Rutowski.
Jonathan Fox, who has served as ETC’s Executive Artistic Director since 2006, will helm the highly anticipated production. “I was fortunate enough to see the very first production in London, starring Paul Scofield as the composer Salieri,” said Fox. “Even before the reviews came out, I felt that I had seen a major theatrical event. I’m pleased to open our exciting new season with this deliciously fun play.” Fox’s recent directorial credits include A Little Night Music, Metamorphoses, The Liar, Crime and Punishment, Underneath the Lintel, The Glass Menagerie, Buried Child, Take Me Out, Old Wicked Songs, and Visiting Mr. Green. He is the recipient of seven Indy Awards.
Daniel Gerroll will portray the infamous, afflicted composer, Salieri. Gerroll spent six years in the British Repertory system, including his appearance in the long running Royal Court Theatre production of Once A Catholic, before being cast in the Oscar winning film Chariots of Fire. In 1984, he translated four years of on and off Broadway work into a directing career, beginning with Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of On Approval, which was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. Since 2001, Gerroll has worked as an actor and director across the country, including Bay Street Theatre Festival, the Guthrie Theater, and the Ahmanson Theatre. The recipient of a Theatre World Award, an Outer Critics’ Circle Award, and a Village Voice OBIE for Sustained Excellence in Theatre, Gerroll has also been seen on the small screen in Cheers, Seinfeld, Knots Landing, Cashmere Mafia, The Starter Wife, Ugly Betty, and The Good Wife.
Randy Harrison tackles the role of Mozart, the brilliant, ahead-of-his-time genius, and foil to Salieri. Harrison, best known for the five seasons he spent playing Justin Taylor on the Showtime series Queer as Folk, made his Broadway debut as Boq in Wicked. Regionally, he has appeared at Cleveland Playhouse, the Studio Theatre, the Guthrie Theatre, SITI Company, and Yale Rep.
Gerroll and Harrison will be joined by Broadway veteran Michael McCarty, Ovation Award Nominees Bo Foxworth and Louis Lotorto, as well as Zoë Chao, and beloved Santa Barbara actor Robert Lesser.
The creative team for Amadeus includes Fred Kinney (Scenic Designer), Dianne Graebner (Costume Designer), Michael Klaers (Lighting Designer), and Barbara Hirsch (Sound).
