ETC’s First Annual Young Playwrights Festival at the New Vic
Ensemble Theatre Company is proud to present the launch of its new Young Playwrights Festival, a theatrical evening of staged readings of plays written by Santa Barbara high school students. The event will be presented at the New Vic on Monday, May 21st at 7pm under the direction ETC's Director of Education Marcus Giamatti.
The Young Playwrights Festival is the result of a collaboration with Dos Pueblos High School. Throughout this academic year, mentors worked with students to shape and refine their playwriting skills by writing a one-act play. This year’s dramatic theme is Truth.
ETC Educational Outreachrecognizes the value of new voices. Voices that express feelings, concepts and ideas that mean something to these writers. It’s not about what story they tell, but about how they tell that story. To support this, ETC’s Education Outreach program is committed to guiding and helping these writers shape their stories, instilling craft-based principles of arc, objective, circumstance and intention.
Our educational mission at ETCis to provide opportunities that will deepen the relationship with our community, our existing patrons and encourage both adult and youth audiences to attend the productions with a heightened awareness, passion and understanding of the theatrical process, the artistic process as well as the issues presented by the work. In this way, we hope to enhance the current work on our stage and position the institution as essential to the cultural and social well being of the Santa Barbara community, our schools and the American Theater.
It is essential for our educational programming at ETC, through classes and community outreach, to continually find ways to maintain a connection to the practices of the past, drawing on them, creating in the present, while structuring a vision for the artistic educational road ahead, with truth and fervor.
