Piper Laurie and Patrick Cassidy Join the Cast of Ensemble Theatre’s A Little Night Music
Ensemble Theatre Company of Santa Barbara (ETC) and Jonathan Fox, Executive Artistic Director are pleased to announce that screen legend Piper Laurie and musical theater star Patrick Cassidy will be joining Stephanie Zimbalist in A Little Night Music. The beloved musical by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler will be the opening production of the New Vic, ETC’s new 300-seat theater in downtown Santa Barbara. Performances begin on December 5, 2013. as, in ETC's 2013-14 season opening show, A Little Night Music. As previously announced, Ms. Zimbalist will perform the role of the celebrated actress Desirée Armfeldt.
Ms. Laurie will star in the role of the wise and sardonic Mme. Armfeldt. She is an award-winning stage, screen and television actress best known for her work in the films The Hustler, Carrie, and Children of a Lesser God, all of which brought her Academy Award nominations, an in the television series “Twin Peaks,” for which she received a Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of Catherine Martell.
Patrick Cassidy, who will play the role of Fredrik Egerman, has a long and distinguished career in musical theatre, including starring roles in Broadway productions of The Pirates of Penzance and Annie Get Your Gun. He received critical acclaimed in the off-Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins at Playwrights Horizons. In 1993, Mr. Cassidy starred as Bobby opposite Carol Burnett in a Los Angeles production of Sondheim's musicalCompany. He has performed with his mother, Shirley Jones, and appeared in two films directed by ETC board member Glenn Jordan.
A Little Night Music is a humorous and, at times, farcical story of romantic attachments, detachments, and mismatchings. Infused throughout with the flavor of a waltz, the musical takes place in turn-of-the-century Sweden and features one of Sondheim's best-known songs, “Send in the Clowns.” This beloved musical was inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film, Smiles of a Summer Night. The production will be directed by Jonathan Fox will direct.
Founded in 1979, Ensemble Theatre is Santa Barbara’s leading professional, resident theatre company. Under the leadership of Jonathan Fox, Executive Artistic Director, ETC has featured accomplished artists from around the country. Beginning in December 2013, the company will perform in its new permanent home at the New Vic (formerly the Victoria Hall Theater), located in the heart of Santa Barbara's historic theater district at 33 West Victoria Street, which has undergone a major transformation into a state-of-the-art 300-seat theater.
ETC's 2013-14 season continues with Good People by David Lindsay-Abaire, running February 6 – 23, 2014; Metamorphoses, based on the Myths of Ovid written and originally directed by Mary Zimmerman, running March 27 – April 13, 2014; Red by John Logan, running May 15 – June 1, 2014; and Looped, written by Matthew Lombardo and starringMarsha Mason, July 10 – 27, 2014.
Subscriptions to the new season are now available and range from $135 to $300 for a five-play series. Special youth subscription series for theatergoers aged 29 and under are only $90.
