Ensemble Theatre Company Announces
Ownership of the New Vic
(Santa Barbara, CA) Ensemble Theatre Company (ETC) is thrilled to announce the company has acquired full ownership of its state-of-the-art New Vic Theater in downtown Santa Barbara, a purchase made possible by a $950,000 grant from the former City of Santa Barbara Redevelopment Agency, and by the extraordinary vision and generosity of Kandy Luria-Budgor and Leatrice Luria.
“Purchase of a permanent home in the Downtown Performing Arts District is the culmination of 14 years of planning and work by ETC, and the final element of the City’s 35-year goal of creating a vibrant performing arts district,” said Derek A. Westen, former President of Ensemble Theatre Company, a Board member, and volunteer leader of the effort.
“We’re thrilled to reach this critical milestone,” said Jonathan Fox, Executive Artistic Director. “At last, we have permanent ownership of the gorgeous, state-of-the-art, 300-seat New Vic. Our new home enables us to reach new artistic heights and to continue presenting theatrical productions of the highest quality, while making the theater available to a rich variety of other performing arts organizations.”
In 2010, ETC launched its successful “Ensemble at the New Vic” capital campaign to completely transform the 80-year old Victoria Community Hall, located at 33 West Victoria Street, Santa Barbara, previously owned by CALM, RSVP, and Unity Shoppe, into a state-of-the-art theater. The capital campaign, led by Derek A. Westen and Léni Fé Bland, with the passion and dedication of Ensemble’s Board of Directors and countless enthusiastic supporters and volunteers, raised over $11.5 million for construction and planning-related expenses to renovate and update the venue.
“In 2013, at a critical time, when ETC still held only a lease of the theater, Kandy and Lee demonstrated extraordinary vision in purchasing the New Vic—still under renovation—and holding it until this day. Their extraordinary generosity will make a permanent contribution to Ensemble, to the entire performing arts, and to the entire community,” said Paula Y. Bruice, President of Ensemble Theatre Company.
Founded in 1979, Ensemble Theatre Company is Santa Barbara’s leading professional, resident theatre company. Under the leadership of Jonathan Fox, Executive Artistic Director, and Jill Seltzer, Managing Director, ETC features accomplished artists from around the country. Entering its fourth season in the New Vic, ETC is Santa Barbara’s home for professionally produced theatre, bringing diverse, engaging, and compelling programming and world-class artists to nearly 20,000 patrons annually. As a member of the Historic Theater District, ETC has helped cement Santa Barbara’s reputation as a one of California’s premiere cultural destinations. ETC’s 2016-17 season will include Macbeth, by William Shakespeare; Chapter Two, by Neil Simon, The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin, DuBose Heyward, and Ira Gershwin; Baby Doll by Tennessee Williams; and Syncopation by Allan Knee.
