Porgy and Bess: February 24, 2017 at 11:00 am
Ensemble Theatre Company’s 2016-17 Season continues with a bold jazz interpretation of the great American musical Porgy and Bess. Adapted and updated for the Broadway stage by Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, and NAACP Award-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, Porgy and Bess tells the tragic story of the love between a crippled beggar and a beautiful yet broken former addict and prostitute. Working with a live jazz ensemble, the musical features beloved songs, including “Summertime” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.”
ETC’s production is set in South Carolina in the 1960s, connecting with the deep racial, social and economic issues of the civil rights movement. The musical provides an excellent opportunity for students to experience a professional theater performance which ties into thought-provoking themes sure to incite meaningful dialogue with your students, including the portrayal of African-Americas in popular culture, social justice in the 1960s, and current issues of race in America.
